WEave
WEave begins with the WE.
Two school friends, Supriya and Sonika, had paths that led them into different creative worlds; one into architecture and spatial design, the other into fashion and textiles. Years later, they came together again to create a handloom-inspired bench woven from an upcycled saree.
Inspired by traditional handlooms used to weave Indian sarees and the shared heritage of weaving across cultures, including Emirati Al Sadu, WEave translates the language of interlacing threads into a contemporary furniture piece. A timber frame made by local carpenters in Sharjah holds the woven saree seat, and a reclaimed weaving shuttle becomes part of the support.
But the WE also includes the carpenters, tailors, artisans, weavers and generations of craft knowledge that make a piece like this possible.
Each year the region’s A+D community comes together to celebrate sustainable designs in support of Surge’s mission to bring comprehensive Water+ solutions that include safe water, sanitation, hygiene and menstrual health to global communities.
