In Ramadan, I received a call from a lady asking me to help a 3 year old Yemeni girl suffering from a rare disease in her eyes “AFRA” the girl with Retinoplastomy and nowhere to go.

It was a warm Ramadan night, prayers were being held at the mosques of Ajman, I was driving to get to Afra, a 3 year old girl who was diagnosed with a rare disease in her right eye and couldn’t find treatment anywhere. I remember the conversation I had with the lady who identified herself as Afra’s aunt. She was confused, worried and desperate.

We reached the location, a small apartment in a low rise building, Afra was sitting coloring with her sister. As she looked up I noticed there was something wrong. Her eye gazed to the side, unable to fix her sight on me. Afra turned her head to get a better look, that's when I knew it was a serious matter.

I stopped to talk with her mother and looked at her medical reports.

Afra, 3 years old, was diagnosed a year ago with Retinoplastoma, a rare malignant tumor that is caused by genetic mutation. This malignancy can lead to serious life threating complications as it can quickly spread to her brain and spine.

Afra’s mother, a Jordanian single mother tried her best to find the appropriate treatment for her baby, knocking on every door and even seeking help in foreign countries but no one wanted to take the risk, no one had the courage to treat Afra due to the complexity of her condition.

In the past, the only option Afra had was to have her eyes totally removed and to undergo chemotherapy for months in an attempt to limit the spread of cancer. But with the developments in medicine, Afra can now retain her seeing eyes and undergo a complicated treatment to deliver Chemotherapy directly to the small vessels in her eyes. Afra will have to repeat that procedure several times then undergo Laser surgery to kill the cancer cells. If that works she will then need to undergo additional surgical procedures to fix the alignment of her eyes.

Unfortunately, Afra’s treatment is not available everywhere, she has to travel to seek medical care. Her treatment will cost her mother AED 300,000.

Afra needs your help and support to save her life, save her eyes and enjoy a normal childhood. She needs your prayers to help her through the rough times of her multiple surgeries.

عندما تواصلت معي سيدة عربية لتخبرني عن احتياج طفلة يمنية تعاني من مرض في عينها لم أتوقع أو أقدر حجم المعاناة التي عاشتها أسرة عفراء بسام طفلة الثلاث ربيعا

في أحد ليالي رمضان المباركة توجه فريق عمل مؤسسة نور دبي الى إمارة عجمان حيث تسكن الطفلة عفراء بسام مع أسرتها، وبعد التعرف على الاسرة والاستماع لوالدة عفراء أيقننا بأن عفراء تعاني من ورم سرطاني خطير في عينها اليمنى تم اكتشافه منذ عام. ومنذ عام والاسرة في حيرة من أمرها فقد زارت والدة عفراء عشرات المستشفيات في الدولة كما تقدمت بطلب العلاج في الأردن ودول مختلفة ولكن لم تجد من يقبل بعلاج عفراء لسبب صعوبة العلاج وخطورة المرض و صغر سن عفراء

منذ أن بلغت عفراء عامها الأول تذكر والدتها ملاحظة "لمعة في عينها" فظنت أن عفراء تحتاج لنظارة

   Retinoplastomaاتجهت الام الى أحد مستشفيات الدولة حيث تم تشخيص عفراء بورم سرطاني يدعى

 وهو ورم سرطاني خطير يصيب عيون الأطفال عبر تحور جيني يحدث في خلايا شبكية العين أثناء تكون الجنين

يعد هذا النوع من السرطان خطير جدا لإمكانية انتشاره السريع إلى المخ أو العمود الفقري وهو نادر جدا وكان العلاج المقترح هو استئصال العين وخضوع الطفلة لجلسات علاج كيميائي يرهق جسمها الضعيف

وبفضل الله وجهود القائمين على دعم المرضى في مؤسسة نور دبي وبعد البحث المستمر على سبل علاج مبتكرة تمكن الفريق من العثور على طرق للعلاج عبر قسطرة الاوعية الدموية المغذية لشبكية العين مما سيمكن عفراء من الاحتفاظ بعينها وحياتها

ولكن ستحتاج عفراء للسفر عدة مرات والمكوث في الخارج لتلقي العلاج وهو عبارة عن جرعات عالية من الدواء الكيماوي الذي يحقن عبر القسطرة التي يتم إدخالها من الوعاء الدموي في الرجل صعودا إلى القلب وإلى داخل العين. وبعد ضمور الورم ستخضع عفراء لعدد من عمليات الليزر للتخلص من الخلايا السرطانية التي تشكل خطورة على حياتها

ما زالت عفراء تتلقى العلاج و ما زالت تخضع لجلسات علاج الكيمائي و الليزر و هي في امس الحاجة للدعم لتتمكن من استكمال رحلة علاجها بنجاح و العودة لممارسة حياتها الطبيعية و دخول المدرسة
