Maher El-Tabchy & Eric Robertsen – Swimming for Children’s Health

Our Mission

Two endurance swimmers, Maher El-Tabchy and Eric Robertsen, are embarking on a 30km open-water swim around the Dubai World Islands to raise funds for children facing Autism and Juvenile Arthritis (JIA).

We are teaming up with Al Jalila Foundation to ensure that every dirham raised goes directly toward supporting children in need—whether through specialized therapies, medical treatments, or much-needed research.

The Challenge – 30KM Swim for Kids

On March 1, 2025, we will set out at 5:30 AM, swimming from Kite Beach/Jumeirah Beach to the Dubai World Islands, completing a full 30km loop before returning to shore.

We expect to be in the water for 10-12 hours, pushing our limits in open water—just as these children face challenges every single day.

Why Are We Doing This?

Maher’s Cause – Juvenile Idiopatic Arthritis

? What is Juvenile Arthritis (JIA)?

Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) is a chronic autoimmune condition that affects children as young as six months old. It causes painful swelling, stiffness, and joint damage, making everyday movements difficult and limiting a child's ability to play, run, or even walk without discomfort.

? Why Early Detection is Crucial

Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent long-term joint damage and help children live active, pain-free lives. However, because JIA symptoms—like joint stiffness and swelling—can be mistaken for regular aches and pains, it often goes undiagnosed until severe damage has already set in.

? Awareness is Key

Most people don’t realize that kids can get arthritis too. Raising awareness helps parents, teachers, and healthcare providers recognize symptoms earlier, leading to faster diagnosis and treatment. Through this swim, we want to ensure no child suffers in silence.

This swim is for the young warriors fighting every day against JIA—because every child deserves a life without pain.

Eric’s Cause – Autism Awareness

? What is Autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person communicates, interacts, and experiences the world. It is a spectrum disorder, meaning that every individual with Autism is unique—some may require significant support, while others are highly independent.

? Why Awareness Matters

Autism is often misunderstood. Many children on the spectrum struggle with social interactions, sensory sensitivities, and communication challenges, yet they also possess unique talents and perspectives. Early diagnosis and the right support can significantly improve their development, education, and quality of life.

However, awareness remains a major challenge—many families face stigma, delayed diagnosis, and limited access to resources.

Through Swim for Kids, Eric is using his platform to shine a light on Autism, break down misconceptions, and advocate for better support systems for these children and their families.

? Swimming for Inclusion

This swim is about amplifying voices—ensuring children with Autism & Juvenile Arthritis are seen, understood, and supported.

Every conversation sparked, every dirham raised, and every individual educated brings us closer to a world that embraces neurodiversity.
