Nesmah - From Sails to Shelter by SAY Studio

This piece was brought to life through the lens of sustainability, cultural heritage, and social responsibility. Inspired by the UAE’s deep-rooted connection to the sea and traditional sailing, the design incorporates reclaimed spinnaker and mainsail fabrics materials once shaped by the wind and water, with a nod to the cultural skill and past time of free diving for pearls which is so deeply ingrained in the cultural fabric of the UAE. The ultimate pursuit of this is for the piece to be used as a wearable shelter: capable of protecting the wearer from harsh climates, wind, and rain. It’s designed to be Lightweight, weather resistant, and durable.

By harvesting the many various materials, mechanics and stitching techniques used in these sails to combine the most practical elements into wearable piece of fashion from something that had no further practical use in the field it was designed to be used. We have given it a second life.
