For Operation Smile UAE's 10th Anniversary, our Director, Morag is raising funds by challenging herself to complete the North Coast 500 Virtual Challenge. Her goal is to raise 20,000 AED and complete the virtual journey around the North Coast of Scotland (her home country) - a 500 mile (806 km) trip- by the end of 2021.
Morag will walk, run, cycle and dance her way around the route.
All proceeds will go towards providing free, safe surgery to children with cleft conditions.
Stay tuned for updates!
1st July meant the 1st day of my challenge! Up bright and early for a 6 km walk before work! I am on a high for the rest of the day! Got my first postcard and brought back some fond memories of Scotland. Loved walking along the river in the middle of Inverness as a teenager with some of my childhood friends.
#Update4 days of walking 6 km before work in the heat and humidity just didn't seem enough so I got on the bike last night and did 9 km round Hudayriyat Island! I added another 1 km to the morning walk this morning and if I am still standing, may do another cycle ride tonight! All good, now I just need some people to support Operation Smile and donate!
#UpdateStill walking and cycling in the heat but also done some cycling on the stationary bike inside. Had a break for a day while I had meetings in Dubai but i've got to keep going because so many children are waiting for surgeries. Give me a wave if you see me along the way!
#UpdateUpdate # 4 - July 15th
Lots of hills in Scotland just like in some of the countries where our patients live. It is hard walking but all worth it.
Cycled and walked for over 100 miles! And now having a rest and rejuvenating day!!
Patients and families don't always get that luxury, they have to get to the mission site if they are to have a chance of surgery so I will be back walking and cycling tomorrow to get a sense of feeling what it is like for them.
#Update
I didn't have to go up such a steep climb in Abu Dhabi this morning but my legs still felt a little wobbly at the end of my walk. Thinking of al the children having to walk over hills to get to a mission.
Cycling in the warm evening last night and again on the indoor bike this morning. Didn't get to see the glorious flowers in the postcard but I am happy to have the extra time to get in the miles. Happy Eid Everyone!!!
TThe water looks so cool and inviting. I think it would have been so much easier walking and cycling in Scottish weather but our patients have to walk through all sorts of weather to get to a mission so I am not complaining too much about the weather in Abu Dhabi! 50% of my journey is complete now only another 250 miles to go!!
#UpdatehThe cool turquoise waters look very inviting and it would have been lovely to jump into them last night after a very hot and sticky cycle ride. Some of our families have to cross fast flowing turbulent waters to get to a mission so their child can have surgery.
#UpdateThere is no time anymore
