TAYF - A chair you can wear

TAYF is a sculptural chair with a removable textile designed to become a wrap skirt. Its name comes from the Arabic word طيف, used here to mean a spectrum. The name reflects the idea behind the design: different identities coming together while keeping their individuality.

The concept begins with the sofrah, a shared cloth around which people gather. Each person occupies a different position, yet shares the same centre.  The idea is carried into the textile itself. Different fabric sections are joined into one continuous surface, with their colours and stitched details remaining visible. Each section keeps its character while contributing to the whole. Fine stitched lines draw towards a common centre, echoing the arrangement around the sofrah. Deep blues and teal move into orange and rust, creating the spectrum suggested by the name.

The chair has a curved metal seat supported by a tubular frame. Its removable textile follows the seat and back, bringing colour, texture and craftsmanship to the form.

On the chair, the structure holds and shapes the textile. When removed, the same piece is designed to gather around the waist and move with the wearer as a wrap skirt. Its pattern, edges and fastenings are developed for both uses, allowing it to be worn and returned to the chair without cutting or resewing.

Making the textile removable also allows it to be cared for, repaired or replaced separately from the metal structure.

Each year the region’s A+D community comes together to celebrate sustainable designs in support of Surge’s mission to bring comprehensive Water+ solutions that include safe water, sanitation, hygiene and menstrual health to global communities.
